We were thrilled to offer our NWFA Course, WOOD FLOORING SAW CUTS: APPEARANCE & PERFORMANCE ATTRIBUTES, as a Lunch & Learn for the award-winning Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, at their offices in New York City.

Pei Cobb Freed & Partners is an international architectural firm based in New York City. They are a global leader in architecture, planning, and sustainable design with over six decades in practice. Having completed over 250 building and planning projects in more than 100 cities across North America and around the world, they believe thoughtful use of materials and careful attention to detail are indispensable to creating meaningful and responsible built environment. They have been consistently recognized for design leadership and design excellence, winning over three hundred major design awards, including twenty-five AIA Institute Honor Awards.

We spent a wonderful and truly inspiring afternoon together discussing the nuances of wood cuts, from rift versus quarter sawn to custom orders using rift boards. We also discussed our ability to create custom reactive color processes with wood smoking (also known as fuming) and explained how these processes are still done by hand, using techniques developed over 300 years ago, before the advent of pigment stains or paints. Flooring stains, made from pigment or dye, saturate the wood with color whereas PID Floors’ natural reaction-based stains and wood smoking processes chemically alter the physical structure of the wood, on a molecular level, to produce a desired color or effect. We were also excited to discuss sustainable building materials and why real wood flooring is an environmentally friendly and a sustainable design product. We were honored that this award-winning international architecture, planning, and sustainable design firm chose our luxury wood flooring company to teach this hardwood floors and wood flooring saw cuts focused L&L.
